what sort of IMAP server? what errors, if any, do you get when it tries to 
connect? etc... 

the crashing when removing sounds not so good...  have you updated to the most 
recent KDE packages from SuSe (just checked... the last patch for kmail was 
kdenetwork-3.1.1-100)?
