Okay how do I use Vesa framebuffer then? I have RedHat 8.1 whats the command to do the X-config thing?

I have always done it by setting the resolution in the kernel boot directives. For instance I would boot the kernel with vga=791 and then tell my screen section of my XF86config file to use the frame buffer device instead of the normal video card.

I know there are ways to change the framebuffer resolution on a running system and I suspect you should be able to also run framebuffer with X without running framebuffer in console mode. I just always run framebuffer in console mode. It's fun running things like mplayer and fbtv in a console instead under X. Especially since I was getting better performance....
