I agree with Jesse,

I suggest the following from *Learn Linux in 10 Steps*:

1.    Obtain old / new computer(s).
2.    Install [insert distro here] linux
3.    Play with some tools and appliactions and get comfortable with the OS.
4.    Do some basic installs / upgrades
5.    Try to get some services going such as sshd, ftpd, httpd
6.    Break and fix things (not neccassarily in that order)
7.    Try to get some services going such as sshd, ftpd, httpd
8.    Setup more systems
9.    (Unknown)
10.    RULE THE WORLD.

Can someone help me out with step 9? :-D

And, if you people don't mind my prying, where did you learn the in's and out's of linux (school, self-taught or both). I'm considering a possible different line of work and would appreciate any pointers or suggestions that you may have to offer...

I mostly taught myself (although I did take some courses through
RedHat). I spent lots of time installing systems, installing software,
breaking things and fixing them. IMHO this is the best way to learn.
