I wouldn't worry about destroying your machine. If you follow the instructions for the boot loader, etc. You should get to an older version of the Anaconda installer. It's not that scary. Worse comes to worse it's quite simple to wipe out the drive and reinstall MacOS from CD. The MKLinux list archives are probably the best resource if you run into any problems. The problem I found with MKLinux is at least when I used it, it was way out of date. I think it has been updated since then, but it is probably still out of date. If it is the only version of Linux that will run on your machine (which is probably not true, since Debian usually supports the same hardware) you might want to look into something like NetBSD which might have better support for your box.
