Put it back into focus. Often the outside dials have drifted over time
and will be maxed out. Each dial has a potentiometer (an internal dial)
that can be turned to set the outside dials back within the middle of an
adjusting range. There is also a potentiometer for focusing the screen.
After opening the monitor, be very careful with the capacitors. Use an
insulated screw driver and gloves to protect you and the monitor.

Eventually, the internal dials will be maxed out and that is when you can
finally say that the monitor tube has given you full service. I haven't
bought a monitor in 8 years :)

Some work has been done to try and recycle this tube glass. The glass
contains metals such as lead. Some glass/lead mixtures are used to make
crystals, the most famous glass/lead mixture being Bohemian glass. There
just isn't a lot of demand for crystals, so the monitor glass accumulates.
Other glass is used to make glass beads which are mixed with paint to make
reflective paint which are used to paint the divider lines on our
highways. There is a Calgary company that makes these beads, but it's been
a long time. I don't know their name but when I was there, they were in
the industrial part of town in the SE. They do collect recycled glass.

Peter
