You probably want "oss" in your use flags as well. Then, you might need to
re-emerge xmms. If it was emerged before the sound system, it might not
have had the appropriate sounds system compiled into it (cuz it wasn't
available).

You should also add "xmms" to your use flags (getting my info from
http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/use-index.xml).

other than that (little and possibly erroneous) info, I've haven't spent a
lot of time getting xmms working with my boxes...

Shawn

(PS. I can relate on the KDE emerge - mine finished today, which I started
on Saturday afternoon. But that was an "emerge kde" from a base install
without X installed, so X was compiled too)

Subject: [clug-talk] Gentoo help; finally getting somewhere.

Im completely stumped, and after my 780 million tries to get it right kernel
compile, Im frustrated.

Last time I put in Gentoo I did #emerge kde which took forever and then some
to compile a bunch of apps I dont need [defeating the purpose of Gentoo],
but
the sound worked perfectly. This time, I just emerged kdebase and then xmms
separately, kde plays all the system sounds but xmms insists I dont have an
output. I have oss selected in prefs...

So I did an emerge arts cause I know when oss screws up in mdk if I dont
want
to reboot I use that, but it doesnt show up in xmms as an output plugin.

I also have alsa in, and I put the module config in and ran update-modules.
But when I try to modprobe snd-inteli8x0 it dsays device not found.

The sound card is a Yamaha AC 97 (YAMAHA YMF753) which has an i810 chipset.

my use flags...USE="X gtk kde alsa -gnome dvd"

Any ideas? TIA
