Ive narrowed it down a little but found a new problem. Tried your solutions
but to no avail, so I compiled an include-everything kernel to make sure that
wasnt the problem, and it wasn't. I also added mpeg to my use flags...

[ebuild R ] media-sound/xmms-1.2.7-r20 -xml +nls -esd -gnome +opengl -mmx
+oggvorbis -3dnow +mikmod -directfb -ipv6 -cjk

thats the verbose output for xmms ebuild. There is a mp3 plugin installed in
xmms, I also tried playing mp3s with xine, which didnt work. Xine will play a
DVD with sound working, however. The interesting thing is when its playing
DVDs the system speaker beeps once every 5 seconds. Weird.

The other problem I discovered is when I boot with hdb=ide-scsi, hdb and cdrom
both disappear from /dev and I cant use the drive. Bed time...
