I was prompted to update my kernel today (the mremap () vulnerability no doubt) and did so via SuSE's wonderful YaST. Upon reboot I was left at the console login. So I had to rebuild the Nvidia module (YaST also downloaded and installed the new kernel sources).
If you're using Nvidia's driver you'll likely need to do the same on your distro.
