One and All: Well, I seem to have stirred up quite a hornet's nest, haven't I?
Well, in the final analysis, all your various and contradictory points are well taken and probably defensible, at least in some milieu or another. There is one universal truth that you miss in all this however: If everyone with any brains automagically switched over to Linux or some other *NIX platform, we'd still have the same problem. Only instead of W32/MyDoom-A attacking Window$ based machines, it'd be laying waste to yours! There is some solace to be had from using a side-stream, less than universal operating system. All arguments about its utility or greatness being set aside, it's simply a lot less likely to be trashed by some virus, worm or Trojan horse. After all, why bother going after Linux (a relatively hard nut to crack if administered properly) when you can bring half the world to its knees by attacking a Window$ product that's as holey as Swiss cheese and as common as flies? It's a cost/benefits thing and the crackers who do this sort of thing almost always go after the big, easy money. Now back to my Sokoban game! Peace, health, wisdom and wealth. Live long and prosper.
