One and All:

First, please forgive the cross postings to various lists and any
duplicate mailings.

Next, I have recently received a number of responses from various mailer
daemons stating that one or another E-mail posting that I may have sent
was infected with a virus. The virus identified in one was "W32/MyDoom-A."

Be advised that I do all my E-mail on the University of Calgary's mail
server, not my desktop. Their server runs a variant of UNIX, neither a
Windows nor a Mac mutation. Thus, it is highly unlikely that I would be
responsible for sending virus infected E-mails simply because of the
differences inherent in the operating systems and the remote execution.

Next, because I do not use the Windows based mailers on my desktop, and
indeed have uninstalled them, they could not be sending infected E-mails
under cover.

It is also highly unlikely that my messages would be infected with this or
any other virus because most of the addresses that they are sent to are
not listed in my address book on the UNIX system and I keep no such E-mail
address listing on my desktop.

Still, in an effort to be absolutely sure, I have uninstalled the version
of McAfee Antivirus that I had been using and installed the latest
version, updated all the appropriate virus definition files, then run a
complete virus check on my desktop over the weekend. The result was that
my desktop is absolutely, squeaky clean. No viruses. No worms. No Trojan
horses.

WE ARE ALL AWARE THAT THE CURRENT GENERATION OF VIRUSES MASK THEIR TRUE
ORIGIN BY SUPPLYING DUMMY SOURCE ADDRESSES, and this appears to be the
case here. Somewhere, someone has my E-mail address on their desktop and a
virus is using it with reckless abandon.

Should you receive an E-mail posting directly from me (not through a
mailing list), you are urged to send a confirmation query to me before
opening that message, ESPECIALLY IF IT CONTAINS ANY ATTACHMENTS. I almost
never send attachments, certainly not to complete strangers.

Like the man said "Most of my faults aren't my fault."

WHEN'S THE LAST TIME YOU UPDATED YOUR ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE? YOU *DO* RUN
SOME SORT OF ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE, DON'T YOU?

Are you the problem or the solution?

 Peace, health, wisdom and wealth.
 Live long and prosper.
