I completely agree with you here. I would not try to promote Linux by
saying that it has the same interface as Windows, but there are some
advantages to these projects:
1) Many people resist trying Linux because they are scared of using
something unfamiliar. If they could start out without having to learn a
new interface, then they could focus their time on checking out all the
cool open source programs that Linux has to offer.
2) Some companies may have problems with their employees using Linux on
their desktop, even if it can do everything that Windows can. At my last
job no one really cared that I ran Linux, as I was still able to do
everything. However if my boss had said that I had to use Windows, then
I probably would have collected some Windows themes and deceived
everyone into thinking I was using Windows ;-).
3) Some people may just like the Windows desktop better than GNOME or
KDE (although I'm not sure why). In this case you can still use the
interface that you like, without the blue screen of death slowing you
down :-).
