the SUSE ppl didn't back away from KDE at all during the aquasition period .... in fact, they went out of their way to express their support for KDE both publicly and privately .... they were careful and cautious with their words, of course, as any prudent person in their position would be. the big question really was: a) will SUSE remain in control of its own destiny, or will Novel (and by extention, Ximian) dictate the choices to SUSE? or b) will Novel adopt the SUSE management and tech brains and bring them in house for the expertise? basically, was Novel going to become more SUSE, or was SUSE going to become more Novel? Miguel & Nat of GNOME/Ximian fame had stated on Slashdot and the gtk+ devel list (of all places!) that they were going to steer SUSE via Novel away from KDE. nothing like a little preemptive predation, right? ;-) this caused many to be concerned, though most of us didn't believe it (didn't pass the "smell" test), and many others to rejoice ... you can figure out for yourself who was concerned and was rejoicing ... =) reality was nobody really knew for sure, not even SUSE and Novel as they were still talking through the details until last month. i think they knew where they wanted to go, it was more a question of if they would end up there or not. at the end of the day it seems that SUSE is going to have a large say in its own future as well as Novel's Linux future. this bodes very well for KDE, as well as for SUSE and Novel. it isn't bad news for GNOME, though, as I think it will mean more effort put into harmonizing KDE and GNOME via Ximian folk working for/with SUSE, which can only be good for everyone ... SUSE also recently started sponsoring the fellow who is doing the KDE-ification of Open Office. this is something SUSE had (quietly) stated they wanted to see happen, and when someone happened to step up they immediately stepped in with financial backing. i think that says a lot for their ongoing commitment to KDE. - -- Aaron J.
