Actually, no it's not:

  - If they get physical access to the machine, all bets are off anyway.

  - You can password protect the boot process both in BIOS and boot
    loader (lilo|grub).

  - Security is a range, from keeping the paper boy out through
    keeping fibbies/CIA/KGB/Milnick out.  Who do you worry about?
    Plan accordingly.
