I thought KMail compacts all my mailboxes on close (at least that what it says 
that it is doing. Hmm? there are some interesting options in KMail's 
configure dialogue.

- By default, message folders on disk are: Directories ("maildir" format).
- On program exit, perform the following tasks: Expire old messages 
(unchecked).

Does that mean that I'm not even using mbox format for my mail? If I change 
that first option will it convert all my existing mail?

Btw, I'm using POP3 Shawn (not IMAP)...and I purge after ever session.
