except that wu-ftpd is one of the packages with a number of security concerns (though 
I think they've patched all the holes that have been found).

I agree SFTP is the way to go, however for a ftp standard on Mandrake I 
would recommend wu-ftpd. It is well documented and one can "tweak" it quite 
nicely.
