What video card do you have? Obviously having accelerated drivers (not just 3D) will play a big part (i.e. not using framebuffer). Also, if you're using MPlayer, changing the video output driver can make a big difference.
Oh, and linuxpackages.net is your friend. :-) One caveat I must mention, though, is there is a distinct lack of MD5 sums. The packages are all user-contributed, so there's nothing guarenteed (including security) about them. However, they're a nice-to-have if you're lazy like me. :-) OTOH, you can compile just about anything without breaking your Slackware system. Have fun!
