Not 100% sure, but this might well be a better way of retaining your PageRank, too.


http://www.google.com/webmasters/4.html#A3 says they can't manually change your links, and that you should tell others who link to you, but the redirect will "inform visitors and search engines that your site has moved".

A 404 (even a customised one) is more likely to get the links de-listed, I'd have thought.
