<snip> I found this just today: the Filesystem Heirarchy Standard (v2.3 released 29-Jan-2004) http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html Has a description and/or rationale for each area of the filesystem. Lots of stuff I didn't know about UNIX-like filesystems.
