Hey man, there's nothing wrong with Gnome. 2.6 is a kick ass desktop. Check out the GNOME 2.6 Desktop System Administration Guide at http://gnome.org/learn/admin-guide/2.6/ in particular take a look at "Disabling GNOME Desktop Features" and "Setting Panel and Panel Object Preferences".
