Thanks Mark, I also came across a post about reverting to a previous BIOS but I didnt even start looking for it. I picked up a Gigabyte 8IPE1000 Pro3 and have been sailing ever since. And I must thank you, and apologise I guess at the same time, for not listening to your advice. Although I had no problems last year with the 3ware PATA RAID card I bought from you for one of my servers, I wanted to see if I could avoid the additional cost of another 3ware SATA card for my new workstation. So, instead of just listening to you (suggested a sware card) when you replied to my earlier questions about SATA Raid and Linux, I tried an Adaptec 1210SA, and Promise on the Asus MB. Both unsucessfuly so although I can also get the 3ware bords from one of my local distributors now, I was in a rush and grabbed the 8506-4lp from Memory Express, and a couple of Seagate 80gb SATA drives.
So now I have 2x80gb SATA drives under RAID 1 for Windows 2K and 2x160 gb Seagate SATA drives under RAID 1 for my Linux distros. Worked "out of the box" for getting both os's and the RAID working. All in all now I think my new workstation qualifies as an "Ultimate" machine.....at least with a cost so far of around 3k it better be!!!! Now a real question? At first I had the 2x80 drives for Windows on the second controller port and when going through the install Windows said it needed to install some files on the drives on the first controller. This I assume is for the boot loader on the MBR? So I switch the drive pairs so the 2x80's for Windows are on the first controller port, and the 2x160's are on the second port for Linux distros. I have not tested failover yet, but I imagine that the MBR is duplicated on both the 80gb drives so I can unplug either one and get a boot loader?? But lets say both 80gb drives died and I wanted to boot into any of the Linux distros. Since there is no longer access to a boot loader on a MBR, I guess I will need to use a boot floppy? Is there any way to avoid this and have duplicate MBR's, one on the 2x80's and the other on the 2x160's? Basically making all 4 drives completely independant and capable of launching a boot loader when any one of the drives is installed alone? ------ original message ------ From: Mark Lane <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: CLUG General <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thu May 20 09:44:30 MDT 2004 Subject: Re: [clug-talk] Fedoa Core 2 and ASUS & P4P800 Series BAD!!!
