Well you should really every time you do a update use etc-update to make
sure your config files are up to date. Not doing this can cause
things to not work is config options/syntax changes.
Is there any problem with leaving the old config files in place?
Usually it works but on occasion it will break things badly. It's not
to painful to keep up with it once you get them cleaned up.
