anything with a "+" as the first character is a new line added with the update. Anything with a "-" as the first character is a line being removed by the update.
At the top of the differences, it cover's this, thought it's not the clearest set of instructions I've read. (btw, I'm doing this from memory - it might be "++" and "--" respectively.) I normally look for the "-" lines as these typically show me what changes I'VE made that will removed. Especially if they are followed immediately with a "+" line setting some default value. I also take a look at the file in question. If it's in the /etc/init.d folder, then generally I allow an auto update because I don't normally change these files. If it were in /etc/apache2/conf/ for instance, then I check it closely because I did customize the Apache config. If I'm ever not sure, I check the file diff closely.
