Hi John. A Long question demands a long answer :-) a1: Just a small note on the version numbers, the x.0 distro version usually has a lot of new stuff in it, and as a direct consiquece, more-then-usual number of bugs. This is a (VERY) general rule, it could even be untrue for some distros. So you upgraded from Mdk 9.2 (note x.2) being the second minor distro of mdk 9, i could assure you, it would have far fewer bugs the the brand-spanking-new mdk 10.0. so pls. bear with us, them, etc...
a2: Your NIC seems to be on good working order, 8139too is a very widely user module, my box actually uses the same, and i am sure my nic is somewhat different then yours :-) The network settings look ok for me. I will ask you to open a terminal window, and try the following things: become root ifconfig and see the output, if eth0 (say) is on and has the parameters you just described in the gui, then go to the second part. ping 64.59.135.133 ping 64.59.135.135 you may stop ping by pressing ctrl+c after a few good pings. In this case, you would be pinging your dns servers. (try to activate this Alphashield before you start the pinging) secondly try browsing the net, if the ping is ok. a3: use menudrake to sculpt the menu as you like, it is a powerful mandrake utility to manage your menu :-) a4: be default only a part of the documentation is installed, if not selected specifically, that is to save space, you can add the rest of the documentation from your distro cdroms, under documentation, and brows around on the distro disks, there should be a whap of documentation their too :-) And yes, the rest of the documentation is indeed on the internet. You may also want to visit http://www.tldp.org/ (the Linux documentation project) also you may want to brows into the nube section of www.clug.ca the exact url is: http://nube.clug.ca/frames.shtml It may not be etirely documentation, but it is full with verey useful information. Ah, you updated from the internet, to do so you need to select your update-source using the packaging/software source manager ... and click on add, select the security updates radio, then click on choose a mirror, shoose one that works, it will tell you got one that does :-). Now after selecting this source uncheck the 3 media disks from the list, and check your new update-source only ... for now. While you are at it, you may want to click on update button, but that is not too important at this moment. Click on Save and quit. then go back to Mandrake update and see what you get, their should be about 250-300 megs of updates waiting for you, the last package is a documentation package thet should fix the documentation problem... a5: Ok, this is going to be short: DONT USE YOUR SYSTEM AS ROOT... EVER. Ok sorry for the shouting. Create a user, and use it like that. It will prompt you for root password when it needs to. You can create as many users as you want. a6: I dont know a lot about alphasheald, but you sure can monitor the traffic on your nic, and see what goes on. Then send us some more info regarding this question. your friends are tcpdump , this one is a bit crude, and command line, your other friend is ethereal .. this one is a gui :-) and it is great. both are available for mandrake, if you did not install them from the disk, you can install them using the gui package manager :-) I hope i was useful here Cheers Szemir On June 10, 2004 20:52, John Marshall wrote: > Hello Everyone: > > I am hoping you can help me with a number of Mandrake 10 Official Linux > problems.
