One way to check the line is to make the loop-back RJ45 jack
with two short wires connecting clips 1 to 3 and 2 to 6.

With the help of such a simple "device" you will be able to check your lines without
disassembling the wall outlets.

However, when I crimped on the RJ45 clips on the basement end, and connected to a switch, I didn't see any lights turn on (i.e. computer to wall, basement end to hub = poor man's line testing device). So, I was curious if my assumptions were wrong, but this doesn't look to be the case.

Next step is to pop off the wall plates (no screws though - hope I don't break it), and make sure they are wired properly, and make sure I have the correct line...
