How would I do this? I've never used lilo, so tell me step-by-step what
to do once I have booted into knoppix.

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LILO.html

basically, you'll need to whip up a lilo.conf (covered in the above linked
HOWTO) and run /sbin/lilo which will install lilo on your disk. if knoppix
doesn't provide lilo (e.g. only uses grub), you'll need to install that
first =) i have no idea what knoppix is using these days.

I'm gonna stick with my GRUB bootdisk (does anyone know how to configure
grub.conf for a boot floppy?) until Tuesday, at which time I shall call
Dell/MS tech support and see what they say about my non-starting
Recovery Console.

i'd LMAO if it turns out it's dieing because of the bad MBR...

I much prefer GRUB to LILO, and if I configure grub.conf right, and keep
the disk in, it will be just like having an MBR. So can anyone help
with THAT?

i much prefer GRUB to LILO too, but primarily because of its added flexibility that is so useful for booting Free OSes and in multiboot situations. since you aren't involved in doing either, i'd just as soon not have to deal with having a disk around at all. though you could probably make a tiny partition on your hard disk for grub and get rid of that annoyance too.

Given that I keep the disk in the computer at all times, the only thing that makes it different from HD-installed is speed (an extra 5 or 10 seconds). My real concern is that I won't be able to sell this to anyone who wants a Windows box.

Perhaps a CLUG member would like to get this box:

P4 2.4 GHz
1024 MB RAM
Integrated Ethernet
CirrusLogic Sound Card (I believe)
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro Video Card w 128 MB VRAM
DVD/CD-RW Drive
60 GB Hard Drive

Price undecided. Any takers?

Regards,

Andrew
