Can you give more details? Does the system see it when it boots up (try running
dmesg to find out)? Can you mount cd-roms with it? If not, what errors are you
getting.

You usually need ide-scsi emulation for cd-rw drives with pre-2.6 kernels. It's
simply a matter of editing the /etc/lilo.conf file to pass a parameter to the
kernel when you boot (/dev/hdx=ide-scsi I think).

Judging from my experience at the installfest, I don't think a reinstall would
do you any good as the Debian installer doesn't seem to have very much hardware
detection ;-)
