I solved the problem - for my system at least.

Somehow, when I set up the FTP sources, my folder was set to 
"pub/suse/x86_64", not "pub/suse/i386".  Changed this, tried to install 
packages again, and all the warnings disappeared....  probably a problem 
between the computer and keyboard caused this.... (oops).

Hope this helps some of the other's having problems...
