Graham, The delay is most likely caused by the keyboard settings conflicting with the embedded "accent translation module" which is native to both Windows and Linux based operating systems.
Try the following from a command line or DOS prompt; Keyboard = USEng Language = USEng Limey Translation = Off This should speed things up significantly and also make your messages easier to understand for those of us using text-to-speech recognition.
