Just a nit pick but there are 2 things wrong with this statement, 1)A fast box is not a requirement, I've done a stage 1 install on a pentium 75. It's not quick but in no way is a fast machine a requirement. (distcc can help with this but again is not required....only some patience is) 2) Everything does not have to be compiled from source, using a stage 3 install with GRP. You can have a machine up and running faster then a FC/Mandrake install. The only thing that needs to be compiled is a kernel. And even that isn't 100% required.
With the nit picking complete I would agree with Andrew, you seem to have tried everything but Gentoo, so it doesn't hurt to give it a whirl. ~ I would however recommend a Stage 3 install, as I've done some comparisons and the default optimizations the Gentoo packagers make seem to provide pretty close to the best combination of speed and stability. ~ And it will make your install go much quicker.
