I usually just run NIS for this.. not for passwords or any of that, but for hosts, and other things that loosing them wouldn't be a big issue. Also, remember that you can protect the NIS server with iptables, and hosts.allow to keep only approved machines allowed to connect if you want to be that secure..

I'm also using a setup with rdist to sync passwd and shadow files from a "master" to the rest of the machines using ssh and authkeys.. but that's not the best way, but it really works and I haven't had a chance to change it yet :)

Based on what I've read, I'll need LDAP and NFS (er, NFSv4). One of the things I'm trying to do is to share my HOSTS file among 2 linux servers and my Suse workstation. It's getting annoying to fix 2 of the 3, then have to troubleshoot/fix the third box - normally at some critical point in time. I can handle this via rsync, but I may as well learn how to setup single sign on...
