Is it an ATi onboard vidcard by any chance?

I had similar issues with a friend's Dell Precision ??? and it turned out that 
(after googling) I needed to use the ATi proprietary drivers with a few 
lovely hacks thrown in for good measure--good 'ol ATi ;(
