Yes, but if you have installed the Nvidia driver/module for 3D acceleration, then you upgrade the kernel, you loose the Nvidia stuff. You have to re-install/re-compile the Nvidia drivers in this case, before your gui interface will work again. (or change the XConfig to just use the nv driver).
