In terms of practical use of those languages, I think the courses are likely a waste of time.
However, in terms of learning another language - and how to apply what you already know about coding to other languages, then I think the courses DO have a purpose. Too bad they weren't more pertinent languages though - Java, VB.NET, C#, JavaScript, Cold Fusion, ASP (he already has C++) - any of these are more pertinent in today's marketplace than Pascal, Fortran, or Qbasic.
