As already mentioned, Skype is not open source and their protocol is 
proprietry and closed, however, one of the big advantages it has over SIP is 
that it works pretty well through firewalls. SIP has issues with NAT.

Another alternate is IAX, which is a protocol developed by the Asterisk 
project, which is open and works well through firewalls.

As soon as I have the time, I'm going to be setting up an Asterisk server and 
playing with it more. I know there are already service providers supporting 
the IAX protocol who can terminate to local POTS lines - there is a cost (of 
course).
