Hello,

        What about a X-terminal dump server ?

You should be able to install a minimal Linux distro and then setup X windows and you could run the window manager and all X apps from one of your servers. Then if you had a VPN connection you could have a traveling desktop.

Anywhere you went you could establish a VPN tunnel and load up your desktop and have access to all your files.

THe only problem is I am not sure how the laptop would hole up ... all the X windows processing will be done on the server so the laptop only has to handle the display and X server. The RAM may be an issue.

Michael.

I have a laptop that's not really powerful enough to use as a workstation - it only has 32 MB ram, and a 266 Mhz processor. I know it can serve some function still, but I'm kinda stumped what role I should put it in.

I thought about using it as a firewall, but I already have a Pentium 166 tower in that role. Other than the physical space savings, I don't see any benefit in replacing the firewall. And I already have web and email servers, and another laptop that is in use as a workstation.

The only real option I can think of is to set it up as a diagnostics box. Something with a port sniffer, and any other tools needed to help revive a server, or identify why the network is misbehaving... But I don't really have a need for such a tool (at this time).

Any thoughts on this? (I'd rather not get rid of it, it's still a good box, just need to find a way to make it useful).

Shawn
