I remained a tier 1 member for over a year, not because I did not find value in the being a member nor the lack of camaraderie but for purely financial reasons. Both my wife and I try to attend meetings when we can and late last year, one of us became a tier 2 member. I also became a tier 2 member before the election, for a number of reasons:

I believe in the organization and what it is doing.

I wanted to payback to the general masses the kindness, guidance and knowledge that I have received -- to me this meant supporting CLUG and being a member.

I wanted to support a colleague that was running for a position though the support was likely not required.

Just for the record, I did not feel I was treated any differently as a tier 1 or tier 2 member and surprisingly, I did not feel coerce to become a tier 2.

For all the things that we receive from the organization, this is a bargain. For a newbie, the Installfest, the knowledge and assistance in troubleshooting problems, this mailing list, the workshops is a huge resource that requires dedication, volunteers and just a little bit of capital. I know some of you will argue that I get that now for free as a tier 1, so why bother with tier 2 just to vote. I totally marvel at CLUG as an almost perfect philanthropical society -- it does not charge for any of the above benefits. Are some of you arguing that it should start charging or requiring that you need to be a tier 2 member to participate?

In short, rather than complaining that there is a lack of value in being a tier 2 member, look at what you have and with a little bit of effort maybe we can all contribute to creating even more value rather than just complaining that the free meal coulda / shoulda be better.
