Hi Patrick.

First, you are welcome, i was following the thread, but did not post to
it
:-) a lot :-)

Likely you can not damage hardware using software. Some hardware may
not be
supported under linux, so it will not work, but i guess that will not count
as damage. There was an issue, about 1-2 years back with a mandrake
destroying a specific cdrom drive, both mandrake and the cdrom drive where
patched since. It was a well known incident. I don't think you can damage
your hardware simply using Linux, you need something else for that :-)

As for distro, well, i see you like to play multimedia files, along
with lots
of eyecandy and gui.

Mandrake, 10.1 / 10.2/ Mandriva 2005 are the newest versions, this is a
very
user friendly distro, but you have to set your repositories by hand using
easyurpmi (search for easyurpmi on google ). after that you would be able to
make good use of the distro. It also comes in 3 disks (cd).

Suse 9.2 / 9.3 . Very powerful distro, Yast really covers the system,
and the
repository selection is semi automatic, you are presented with an up to date
list. If it works properly on your hardware, it is like a dream. If it
misconfigures itself, you have got a problem :-)
Yes this on is 5 disks.

Fedora core 3 / 4. A fast growing distro, last time i checked it came
on 4
disks. yum and apt-get are but 2 very flexible package managers. Lots of gui,
lots of server stuff also. You may need to set some stuff manually, but once
you get it running , it is rock solid.

Actually, any of the 3 distros would make a very good beginners distro,
specially suse (1) and mandrake/mandriva (2) and fedora (3) in this order.
Now, any of these 3 distros would nicely compare to a redhat 8.0 as a
rocket
ship to the oxcart

see the links to get an idea :-)
