The cost can be a lot less than $1000. 
 
Off the top of my head you could use a Linux box as your router, which
is generally what I prefer. 
 
You could also buy a linksys that does this as well.  I bought firmware
from sveasoft.com that also allows me to prioritize VoIP traffic, so
router + firmware was ~$100 CDN. 
 
Having said that running them on physically separate networks is
probably not a bad idea
