Basically everything is stored on a server in the basement. With nfs, working with large files accross the network I saw cpu utilization of 100%. With cifs this has dropped to ~5-10%. The high cpu utulization was the killer for me.
Note both the server and my audio workstation are running linux. Samba was simply what worked best. The other upside is that all my audio recording friends all have Windows PC based DAWs (contrary to some popular beliefs, Macs are *not* a better platform for audio production) and this solution allows them easy access as well, when they are physically present that is.
