Thanks again for your offer. I didn't want to leave you wandering. Here is a quick update. After speaking with a couple of people, I become more inundated with uncertainties to the point that I had to re-think. I heard from one person willing to drop by - and I ended up discussing over the phone. Current status is I have one machine with Suse 10, wanting to configure it for web/mail/file/db service. Surely, if I can get linux to stop barking at me at every turn.... In the meantime, I am resorting to books, FAQs, to learn where Step 1 is, and I might sheepishly return to posting more questions.
