Couple questions...

You said the server stopped working... By that do you mean it was 
working and then just stopped?

Would you post smb.conf?

If it was working, did you do any updates? (apt-get, yada yada) if it 
was working, we just need to find out what if any changes were made that 
broke it, (deliberate or automatic) In my experience, a working service 
does not "just quit" without external influence.

Note, these changes do not have to be on the broken box.. think if you 
made changes to network services, dns, ntp time etc that may influence 
the samba server

An obvious one ... check iptables?

As Szemir asked, post the output to /var/log/messages when you start 
smbd. I sometimes like to clear the log file first ... echo new > /var 
log messages ... then restart the service, just to clear the cruft.
