On re-reading the email I have to agree with Jamie.  Although its possible to 
get the desktop environmant to forward through X its not obvious how to do 
that.  Also when I read my response its obvious that I was asleep (yes I take 
your advice that ssh as root is verboten).  The more obvious thing that 
happens in distros is that X11Forwarding is turned off.  That results is 
being logged in but when you start an X application it says it can't find a 
display.

In terms of running a destop environment I think that raw X as opposed to 
FreeNX would result in a SLOW response.

BTW, just out of curiosity and I know that FreeNX and VNC are better 
solutions, if a person were to forward X to a remote computer and entered 
'startkde' would that start a KDE desktop on the remote machine?  What would 
happen to any currently running X display manager?  Wouldn't that bork things 
up on the local machine?
