I have an AMD 3000+. When I first set it up, I set up Gentoo 64 bit.
Then I found out Firefox had some 64 bit issues. And MPlayer (or at
least some codecs) just don't work in a 64 bit environment, so you had
to set up a special chroot instance of Gentoo to get the libraries
right and get that to work. So I chickened out and did a 32 bit
install, and it runs just great.

That was last year, so maybe things have changed since then on the
Firefox front. I doubt the codec thing can be fixed since it centered
around closed-source codecs that MPlayer really has no control over.
YMMV.
