When I first set it up, I set up Gentoo 64 bit. Then I found out Firefox had some 64 bit issues. And MPlayer (or at least some codecs) just don't work in a 64 bit environment, so you had to set up a special chroot instance of Gentoo to get the libraries right and get that to work. So I chickened out and did a 32 bit install, and it runs just great.
That was last year, so maybe things have changed since then on the Firefox front. I doubt the codec thing can be fixed since it centered around closed-source codecs that MPlayer really has no control over. YMMV.
