i.e. /bin/sh -c "/usr/bin/pwd" or /bin/tcsh -c "/usr/bin/pwd" maybe you're in a chrooted environment somehow? IIRC, some shells have built-in "trivial" commands, and they don't always work right. Bashes "echo" command for instance does not seem to support escape sequences.
