Well, here may be a hint as to what your problem is:
>From the pwd(1) man page on gentoo (which for some reason doesn't seem
to match the functionality of /usr/bin/pwd):
NOTE: your shell may have its own version of pwd which will supercede
the version described here. Please refer to your shell's documentation
for details about the options it supports.
