Yes Jesse, I am indeed using KDE. I will try your suggestions.

I used Kmix to configure my microphone and when I click on amplify mic, 
(or something similar), I hear my voice and breathing loudly in my head 
phones. But when I telephone echo123 I still do not hear my voice, even 
though I hear my voice in my headphones when I am making the call.
