Not a final answer, but a "next step": At "grub> root (hd", enter your
number, 0, 1, or 2, and a comma, and hit the tab key again.  If grub
finds multiple partitions on the drive (like, an ext2 and a swap), it
will tell you.  So, you could at least use that trick to help figure
out which drive is which, though I agree with you that hd1 should be
your Windows drive.
