I've used this dd_rescue approach once before, and was able to recover my 
critical files.  But, I believe that if you have to go to this extreme, buy a 
new drive ASAP.  The drive in question for me, did work for a while (other 
than the bad partition), but it refuses to take a format now at all.  So that 
drive is now a paperweight.
