It is usually a good idea to backup /etc/apt/sources.list as well (I don't use Automatix, but I have a couple of third party sources that get me most of the same things). I would also recommend Kubuntu over the regular Ubuntu. KDE is a joy to use, I wish I could say the same about the current Gnome (I was a long time Gnome user, KDE won me over). Why didn't you like it? I know I liked Kubuntu because it was a hybrid of a stable Debian variant and a recent KDE. I am a huge fan of Debian.
