Try using an ftp client that supports PASV such as lftp or ncftp (gftp
is a gui client that should work).  On the same subnet it should not
matter, but it doesn't hurt to be thorough.

Since ftp is in the clear, I would look at the raw session with Ethereal
or some similar tool.
